Matthew Hooton was appointed Mongolia’s Honorary Consul to New Zealand in December 2017.

Matthew’s first trip to Mongolia was as a 25 year old backpacker in 1997, catching the train from Beijing, staying at the legendary Gana’s Guest House in Ulaanbaatar and doing the traditional UAZ-452 bukhanka van trip to Khövsgöl Nuur.

Since then, he has returned many times, including for commercial projects for Newcom and Khan Bank.

In New Zealand, Matthew works in public relations and lobbying, and does weekly political commentary, including a weekly column in the country’s largest newspaper, the New Zealand Herald, and on its top rating radio stations, RNZ and NewstalkZB.

Matthew is married to Cathy Wood. They have two daughters and – like all good Mongolians – a dog, called Valour.
